Project Update

Hi Everyone,

It's another hot Summer day, and we got a quick update for all of you campers out there sweating it out.

On the development front, the team at Illfonic has been hard at work on the game (as always). We've hit some snags as of late, animations are taking longer than anticipated, acquiring solid Part 6 Jason reference images and props became an ordeal, and we're having problems with UE4 media framework video render to texture features (even workarounds don't work). Development has it's ups and downs, frustrating moments, but balancing breakthroughs and fun team playtests ensure that the morale isn't being affected by the issues being hit.

Now take a gander at the latest updates below.

Last Week:

  • Design – Refined the Higgins Haven Map and populated it with all gameplay objects, updated in-game map to be consistent with changes, testing map scale/size and how that affects player speed and power cool downs for Jason.
  • Engineering – Built out hiding spot system and hooked up Outhouse and Armoire hiding spots assets for design to place in levels, Implemented small items (Firecracker, Flare, First Aid Spray (self), pocket knife), began working on final lobby system, got small items spawning out of cabinets, tightened up door interactions, fixed bugs.
  • Art - Virtual Cabin Counselor Room, finished display cases for VC Item Room, resumed work on VC Foliage room, provided feedback for in production characters, created loading screens, created inventory icons for small items, created blockout meshes for flare gun, med spray, CB Radio
  • Animation – Continued getting kill animations in, added rough pass cinematic cameras to kills, recorded new kills for sound team to use as reference, added hiding spot kills for Outhouse and Armoire, cleaned up additional counselor interaction animations (cabinets, doors), rigged Flirty Girl

This Week:

  • Design – Create Tutorial document defining onboarding for new players, update controls and streamline interactions, work with engineering on updating fear system, tune range of interactables, more Higgin's Haven map placement tweaks and balancing
  • Engineering – update fear system backend and add new fear effects, work on item spawner system, work with Animation to update interaction system backend to get more responsive cabinet searching anims, create first pass of in-game dynamic music system, modify backend lobby system and start work on new prematch lobby, get preview mesh cameras working in editor for designers to see item orientation when placing items that will use a spawner, begin building framework for XP and scoring system, hook up bear trap animations and make them able to stun players, and fix plenty of bugs.
  • Art - Iterate on loading screens, work on first pass of end of match scoreboard, create new Fear VFX, create new Jason morph dissolve VFX, finish work on textures and begin set dressing, create final mesh and textures for CB radio, create TPS-800AX computer for Virtual Cabin item room and the game, give feedback to external artists on 3D characters in production, complete set dressing for Item Room for Virtual Cabin, polish up concept art for new counselor characters unlocked through Slasher Backer
  • Animation – Use new interaction system hookups from Engineering to polish counselor interaction animations, get one hiding spot kill in for each Jason weapon type, work on basic facial expressions for facial animation system, continue cleaning up animations for kills

Virtual Cabin Updates!!!

As some of you enlightened campers know, the Counselor Room unlocked over a week ago and the good news is, we will open up the Item Room this Friday (8/12)!

It's time to meet the fresh meat in person!
It's time to meet the fresh meat in person!

So the last update was pretty exciting as it let players start to get up close and personal with the victi... Err, I mean Counselors.

Meet your camp counselors!!! More to come...
Meet your camp counselors!!! More to come...

The next update unlocks the Item Room and soon you'll see that it's packed full of surprises and objects from the Friday the 13th movies...

Check out all the props!
Check out all the props!

The Virtual Cabin came about after the Kickstarter as a way to let all of the Backers and Friday the 13th fans following the game come behind the scenes. We really want to bring all of you along for the ride, and do so in an interactive way.

You can get a taste of what's to come in the full-game, listen to audio dev blogs, hear music from the soundtrack, and explore the mysteries of Camp Crystal Lake from within the cabin. $15 gets you access on Steam and you'll get regular updates as it expands. Pick it up for some amazing Friday the 13th fan service!!

New Counselor Concept Art

With the Counselor room unlocked in the Cabin, we wanted to bring you some unseen counselor concepts in preparation for some new 3D models to start hitting the Virtual Cabin.

Happy, flirty and fun...
Happy, flirty and fun...

A veritable bundle of energy, the flirty girl is good at sneaking around, with a high Stealth stat, and is light enough to run for a long time with good Stamina. She tends to freak out more easily and in general has less in the way of Composure. She's a pretty versatile character, but isn't well-suited for repairing tasks like fixing cars or getting power turned back on in cabins.

We have more concepts and 3D counselor model reveals coming soon and perhaps a couple of surprises as well! We like surprises and we're sure you will too!

Important Reminder: Today is the *Last Day* to make changes to your survey/reward selections
almost 8 years ago – Fri, Jul 08, 2016 at 11:13:47 PM

Hi Everyone,

This quick update is mainly about BackerKit/Slasher Backer related stuff, but we'll also touch on a preview of the Jason room and future Virtual Cabin plans.

First things first... Tonight at 11:59pm PST we will be locking down BackerKit surveys and charging cards for all add-ons & pre-orders. This means that you need to login and make any changes that you want to make. For instance, if you originally chose Steam and want to change your selections to PS4 (main game and DLC) because you got one for your birthday, then you need to do that today. Any other changes you wish to make should be made today as well.

With that said...

Please Complete Your BackerKit Surveys!!

The Surveys were sent out, if you haven't completed yours, please check your email (and spam folder). If for some reason you cannot find the email from me "Randy Greenback - Gun Media" then you can access your survey by going to this link: https://friday-the-13th-the-game.backerkit.com. Once there enter the email address(es) you used for Kickstarter and you can access it that way too.

Please Make Survey Changes, Platform Changes & Add Additional Items

With the link below you can login to your survey and make changes to your selections or information. You can also score some more add-ons (like the Virtual Camp Crystal Lake Cabin Retreat and Interactive Dev Diary) when you go through the checkout process or pledge additional funds to the project.

https://friday-the-13th-the-game.backerkit.com

If you used your Facebook login for your Kickstarter account, your BackerKit login will be the email you used for your Facebook account. If you use an email address, that will be the one you use to log in with.

Again, some of you backed multiple times with different email accounts. If you did, please check all of your email addresses and go through with each one to ensure we can get you all of the rewards you pledged for.

If you need assistance, please contact BackerKit support at https://friday-the-13th-the-game.backerkit.com/faq and they'll get you sorted out!

Updating Shipping Addresses

People move, living arrangements change, so with that in mind, you will be able to update your physical home address after today, up until we are ready to start shipping. You can do that yourself by logging in and following the above process.

Help Bring Back Tommy Jarvis

We're only 8k away!!!
We're only 8k away!!!

Help us hit the next Stretch Goal to unlock a playable Tommy Jarvis in the game! We have until 11:59pm PST to do this. Buy the cabin if you haven't, pick up the art book or soundtrack, spread the word to your friends!

Let's do this!

Virtual Cabin: The Jason Room is Unlocking Soon (July 15th)

Are you ready to go downstairs into the Jason Room?
Are you ready to go downstairs into the Jason Room?

Prepare yourselves! If you have the Virtual Cabin already, then soon the Jason Room will be unlocked.

The team at Illfonic is also adding more interactive elements, puzzles and surprises. The updates are going to keep coming and over time perhaps you'll be one of the lucky few to solve the mystery of the Virtual Cabin on camp Crystal Lake.

If you don't know what the Virtual Cabin is... Read up on it below.

Our desire to be as transparent with our backers in our development progress and processes as possible has merged with a way to give people a taste of the digital experience we're going to deliver in the game.

Looks so quaint and cozy... Right?
Looks so quaint and cozy... Right?

Every themed room in the cabin has new things to see, and as assets are produced they'll show up inside of them via regular updates. Wander the cabin in first-person and see 3D models of the Weapons, Counselors and Environment Objects.

One room in particular, Jason's Chambers is A MUST SEE for Friday the 13th fans! Experience the Jason models we build for the game in 3D and to scale. Walk around each Jason, seeing every small, painstaking detail that is put into bringing the notorious slasher to life.

Warm and inviting... With a lakeside view!
Warm and inviting... With a lakeside view!

Enjoy the cabin's radio that pumps out the music tracks from Harry Manfredini, with new music added as he finishes tracks. Listen to audio dev diaries to go behind the curtain and glimpse into the goings on at Illfonic and Gun Media. Sit down and watch some horror classics on the TV. Fans will get to see new game assets as they are created first, and also watch videos and listen to audio from the team, interviews with horror icons like Sean Cunningham, Tom Savini, Kane Hodder and more.

Have a seat and chill awhile...

This cabin also serves as a Friday the 13th Museum. There will be exhibits that highlight characters (like Pamela) and interesting behind the scenes information both from the game and films.

If you don't have it, what are you waiting for? Hop over and purchase it now to get it for PC on Steam. You'll get a code within 2-4 hours of purchase.

Wrap-Up

Thanks goes out to all the backers and Friday the 13th fans out there. We could not be doing this without you!

Stay safe out there campers!

Get Ready! We're Releasing the Friday the 13th: The Game Virtual Cabin Preview on Steam tonight!!
almost 8 years ago – Fri, Jul 01, 2016 at 12:23:39 AM

Hello fellow Friday the 13th fans!

Today is the day we launch the Crystal Lake Virtual Cabin Preview. We really want to bring our backers and Friday the 13th fans along for the ride on the development side of things, and we're happy you hopped on board! The Virtual Cabin is an interactive behind the scenes look at the development and will eventually grow to become a digital museum of the development process on the game. We'll be charging cards soon if you ordered the Cabin and soon thereafter your codes will arrive via email.

Currently the Virtual Cabin Preview is PC only. Redeeming the codes is easy, you'll just login to Steam (or download, sign-up and login to Steam if you don't have an account already), then redeem the code via the +Add a Game option in the Steam client. Here is a link with more info on adding a game to your Steam account.

With this being the initial release it won't be as expansive as it's ultimately planned to be, but as we've stated, we have an update schedule to continue to grow it over the coming months. We'll have an update tomorrow that adds a few more features, then on July 15th we'll grant access to the Jason Room for all of you out there and add even more.

For today you'll be able to walk around the cabin in full 3D and check out the latest assets from the game, see the details the artists have added, listen to the radio for tracks from the game soundtrack as well as behind the scenes audio tracks with the dev team discussing the game. We'll be adding more rooms, more game models as they are completed, additional audio tracks for the radio, a working TV that shows videos down the road, and much, much more!

Take a look at these screenshots attached and get ready to enter the Virtual Cabin!

2 soundtrack songs, 2 game tracks from Harry, and 2 audio dev blogs to start!

The team has hidden a bunch of objects from various movies, and they all look exactly as they did on the films. All you hardcore Friday the 13th fans should spend some time finding the objects, taking screenshots and posting them on Twitter and tagging @friday13thgame with your guesses for which movies they are from.

Please spread the word and have others consider pre-ordering the game and/or the Virtual Cabin on Slasher Backer to help us hit more Stretch Goals.

Update #23: E3 Wrap-Up! Digital Cabin Releasing June 30th!, Slasher Backer Update, F13 Twitch Stream, and much more!
almost 8 years ago – Sat, Jun 25, 2016 at 12:49:14 AM

Project Update

Hello all you backers! We're back from E3 and have all mostly recouped from the hectic nature of the biggest industry show on this side of the world.

Readyto roll? Let's start with an update on what the team has been working on.

Last Week:

  • Recovering from E3  ;)

This Week:

  • Design – Place items as they get implemented from Engineering in the Higgins Level, do some functionality tests on the Higgins level to make sure the current gameplay systems are working as intended, write up any proposed feature changes and discuss with leads.
  • Engineering – Finish set up on the Virtual Cabin Application and support Art team, implement radio song selection for the Living Room, update interaction system for the game to be more flexible (this affects item pickups, doors, windows, etc), begin creating items (Flare/Firecracker/First Aid), clean up context kill interaction system to be more generic and modular (this will save us time later when we're adding a lot more kills)
  • Art - Polish up the Virtual Cabin Living Room, begin polishing the rest of Higgins Haven level (start set dressing campsites and adding vegetation), updates on Head Counselor and Flirty Girl.
  • Animation – Counselor Combat Animations (weapon swings, dodges, combat locomotion), discuss options for adjusting player locomotion speeds.

E3 Gameplay Reveal

Just in case you haven't seen it yet... Check out the gameplay reveal that we put out to kick off E3 with.

**Keep in mind that Jason's abilities are normally on cooldowns, for the video we set them to refresh nearly instantaneously, so he's will not be this OP. Jason's powers are all fear based, so in the final game counselors that play smart and manage their fear levels will stall his abilities from charging faster.**

With that little note, enjoy...

We got tons of coverage while at E3 and the reception for the gameplay was off the charts! All this from a small team that wasn't even on the show floor! Hats off to all the devs at Illfonic for pulling this off. If you aren't already following Illfonic on Twitter, rectify that.
